Founded on April 29, 2000, CSU is a merger of three distinguished institutions:
- Hunan Medical University (HMU) - Originating from the Xiangya Medical College established in 1914.
- Changsha Railway University (CRU) - Renowned for engineering and infrastructure research.
- Central South University of Technology (CSUT) - Renowned for metallurgy and mining engineering.
